A hawker counter has more than one job. It holds the equipment, but it is also where food is packed, change is counted and a customer asks for one more packet of chilli.

A new POS has to earn its space there. The right question is not only “How much a month?” It is “What will this setup cost to run, and will it make our stall easier to manage?”

Compare a hawker POS in three parts: the full cost over the period you expect to use it, the usable counter space it occupies, and what the team can still do if connectivity fails. Free software does not mean a free complete setup, and an offline sales record does not prove an electronic payment has arrived.

This guide is published by Hawker Online. It explains our free-software offer, but the comparison worksheet can be used with any provider. It is not an independent ranking of POS brands.

How much does Hawker POS software cost?

Hawker POS, Hawker CFD and Self-ordering software are free. There is no monthly or annual software subscription. This offer covers the software only—not a complete counter installation.

SoftwareSoftware feeWhat to allow for separately
Hawker POSS$0Compatible equipment and any setup or services required
Hawker CFD + Self-orderingS$0Customer-facing equipment and configuration; requires Hawker POS

Hardware, accessories, installation, training, connectivity and any additional services are outside the free software offer. Ask for a written quote that identifies what is included. Payment processing, bank payouts and HOPPY have separate terms and fees. Future upgrades are not automatically included.

Start with the workflow you need, then select suitable equipment and services. There is no need to compare monthly versus annual software plans for these three products. View current Hawker POS pricing.

Use a whole-cost worksheet before accepting a quote

Ask each provider to price the same number of devices, users and locations over the same period. Keep refundable deposits separate from expenses: they still affect the cash needed to get started.

Cost to write downQuestion to resolve
Hardware and mountingWhat devices, stands, printers and accessories are included?
Setup and trainingIs menu entry, installation and staff familiarisation included?
SoftwareIs the fee per stall, device, user or outlet? Which add-ons are necessary?
ConnectivityWill you use existing Wi-Fi, a data plan or both? Who pays?
Payments and payoutsWhat transaction, payout or other service fees apply?
Support and replacementWhat is included, and what requires a separate payment?
Leaving or changing the serviceWhat notice, equipment-return and data-export terms apply?

Your comparison total is the setup and equipment cost, plus any software charges from the provider being compared, connectivity, support and estimated usage-based charges over the chosen period. Add applicable taxes. List deposits and potential exit costs alongside the total rather than hiding them inside a monthly headline.

For example, a hypothetical S$600 equipment purchase spread over 24 months adds S$25 a month to your budgeting view, before other applicable charges. That is arithmetic for comparing quotes—not a Hawker POS equipment price or a financing offer.

If grant support matters to the decision, check the current approved solution and applicant requirements before purchasing. Do not assume every POS or hardware package qualifies. Enterprise Singapore's PSG information.

Measure working space, not just screen size

A small screen is not necessarily a small installation. A stand, cable connection, cash drawer or separate printer may occupy the space you normally use for packing.

Before ordering equipment, mark its actual footprint on the counter using measurements from the supplier. Leave room for cables and ventilation as required by the manufacturer. Then rehearse your ordinary movements with an empty takeaway container and a tray.

Can you pack without reaching across the screen? Can another staff member pass behind you? Is the device away from heat, splashes and the area used to prepare food? Can a customer see the total without blocking collection?

If you add a customer display, measure the complete arrangement. Ask to see the proposed hardware together, not separate catalogue photographs. Confirm placement against your stall operator's requirements.

The aim is to make space for service—not to fill every spare corner with technology.

What does “offline POS” actually mean?

Treat offline capability as several questions, not a yes-or-no badge.

What you need to doWhat must be established
Record a sale while disconnectedWhich records are saved locally, and what happens if the device restarts?
Send an order to another screenDoes the connection between devices still work in that situation?
Accept an electronic paymentWhat connectivity and payment-provider services are required?
Verify that paymentWhich merchant-side record confirms the amount and status?
Reconnect laterHow do saved records sync, and how are duplicates or incomplete transactions handled?

A printed QR code remains visible if your stall's Wi-Fi fails. That does not mean the payment is offline, or that scanning the code proves money was received. The customer's payment service still needs to complete the transfer, and the stall needs a reliable way to confirm it.

PayNow enables transfers through participating banks and non-bank financial institutions using FAST. A printed code is a way to start that process, not a receipt. ABS explains PayNow.

Ask the supplier to demonstrate the proposed setup's behaviour during a controlled connection loss. Do not interrupt a live trading system as a test. Agree on an alternative service process before the next busy period, including what staff should do when payment status is uncertain.

Payment confirmation and bank payout are different moments

An order being recorded, a payment being confirmed and funds being paid out to your bank account are not interchangeable statuses.

Where a service collects payments and pays out later, confirm its payout schedule, cut-off time and fees. Do not infer the provider's payout timing simply from the payment method's name.

For stalls evaluating HOPPY PayNow Soundbox, review the current transaction-fee and payout information on its page. HOPPY is a separate payment-confirmation offering; the free POS software offer above does not change HOPPY's pricing.

That distinction helps you plan money for supplies without confusing a sales total with the amount already available in the bank.

Add the next useful capability, not every capability

A stall that needs clearer order entry may start with POS. A team that often repeats orders to customers may benefit from a customer-facing display. Self-ordering may help when customers need another way to begin an order—but it will not increase cooking capacity by itself.

Keep a counter-ordering option for people who want help. Let customers ask about a dish without first creating an account. Make the total easy to see, and keep the collection process understandable.

Good technology should support the familiar exchange that makes a hawker stall feel local. It should not make a regular feel that buying lunch has become an administrative task.

Explore Hawker POS, customer display and self-ordering features, then ask for a setup matched to your menu, available space and team.

Discuss your stall setup with Hawker Online

Bring three things: a photograph of the counter without customers' faces or private information, your available measurements, and the monthly budget you are comfortable with. A useful proposal should explain what is included, what is optional and what the team needs to practise.

Questions stallholders often ask

Does free Hawker POS software mean the entire setup is free?

No. Hawker POS, Hawker CFD and Self-ordering software are free, but hardware, setup and other services are separate. Compare the complete written quote, including equipment, support and any payment charges.

Can I use equipment I already own?

Possibly. Ask the provider to confirm the supported device, operating system, peripherals and support conditions for the exact setup. Having a browser or touchscreen alone does not establish compatibility.

Does offline mode mean PayNow works without internet?

No. A POS may save a sales record locally while the payment process has different connectivity requirements. Establish how payment completion is confirmed; do not treat a saved order or visible QR code as evidence of receipt.

Should I buy a customer display immediately?

Only if it addresses a useful need and fits the counter. It can make the order and total visible, but placement and the team's routine matter as much as the screen itself.

Which is the best POS for a small hawker stall?

The best fit is the setup your team can operate confidently, within a cost you understand, with enough space for service and clear arrangements for interruptions. Ask for those things to be demonstrated before choosing by brand or headline price.
